Montreal | DANIEL MANZINI | NOMAD. HAIRCHITECT. & JC DE CASTELBAJAC
“It all began at the age of 19, when I have been asked to work at the salon GATE.
My thirst for my job has started and I wanted to learn more. I have decided to attend one of the best hair design schools of Lon don – VIDAL SASSOON – the fashion pilot of the sixtees.
During my stay in Lon don I jumped at the chance and also frequented the Japanese academy CHILDREN OF VISION.
Loaded with new ideas and a solid base I returned to my Italy, where at the age of 21 an unrefusable offer was waiting for me: Business partner of two new GATE salons in Verona. Packed my bag and moved to Verona a day later, with my head full of ideas for my new mission.
My vision was very clear: creating a different image to that of traditional salons.…I was working hard and simontainously on weekends I started working all over Italy passing on my knowledge & the GATE philosophy to other hairdressers by teaching classes.
The first pho toshootings were waiting in line and I became a busy man. My own philosophy was born & it certainly worked: It’s the situation that attract people, not the place by itself.
I combined music, art & fashion in the salon. It became the first place to sell rare music discs, offering the salon walls to young artists, stylists and pho tographers, live b ands & deejays were entertaining clients during their haircuts.
My goal has been reached and it has all become too easy and it was time for a new breakthrough: The new mission was to see the world – time to travel, to explore and get inspired. Back to where it all started I moved back to Lon don.
Even with little knowledge of the English language soon after I started to work at HAIR BY FAIRY based in the heart of Lon don, Covent Garden. In 2001 it has been recognized as one the top UK hair salons Sir Bob Gel dof & Dave Stewart were regular cus tomers.
Feeling pretty confident I changed location to the other side of the world: Australia. One of Sydney’s most knowledgeable and experienced hair stylist’s CHRISTOPHER HANNA employed me for several months. At the salon they offered a complete pampering service guaranteed to make you feel like you have just stepped out of a fashion magazine.
My final s topover took me to Melbourne, St Kilda, one of the most fashionable suburbs. I worked at Salon TONIK and my time at work as well as after work.
After a year in Australia I moved to New Zeal and. The world was my oyster. In seach of new challenges of a new culture I ended up in Welling ton.
Sharing a house with other international guys I met the famous direc tor and pho tographer MATIAS PINOCHET, who won the Toulouse Film festival 2008 with his movie IRRESPIRABLE. I found myself working on a pho toshooting with Matias for my employer HARDIE GRAINGER. I was leading the creative as well as the artistic part of the shooting.
Inspired by Matias I have realised my own documentary “ABORIGINAL COLOURS & MAORI LINES” – its about an inspirational colour and cutting tecnique, which I have developed.
Yet, it was about another culture to embrace. Montreal ! I am currently living in this vibrant city, where I am part of the team of the Montreal Fashion Week and Festival Mode et Design. I am also involved in several pho to shootings for Canadian and US edi torials.
After a week of creative preparations, I will be sculpting the “Pop Tribal F tomes" of JC DE CASTELBAJAC. Another great fashion hair moment to celebrate!
I am still learning and sharing my profession around the world.”
