@RICKOWENSONLINE’ raison d’être is the conscience of humanity. No amount of familiarity with his body of work could lessen the degree to which the idea of conscience – physical and metaphysical – was bearable to #RickOwensss16. In his crafts, in tolerance seemed as unjust as inequality. Subjectively, there was simply no way he could ever accept it. This not a simple denial in the psychobabble Kübler-Ross sense. #RickOwens is not insane; he feels perfectly well that humanity is still belittling women. It’s just that he could never reconcile himself to the thought. So to those who admire him, there was nothing surprising about his #SS16 collection to celebrate the life of a woman. I found myself thinking of all weights women have to carry, staunched in their commitments to trying to live this life. I found myself thinking of my mother. I found myself thinking of my sister, a mother, too. All their weights. All their lives. Life, the chance to live decently, all in togetherness, is what he wants. For all women. Believing one has no choice is not the same thing as believing one is doing the right thing. And that’s the question he asked us: did we do the right thing by them? Fashions, like affirmations, are for the living women. That’s how loving #Rick #Owens is.
