Florence | FERRAGAMO | CELEBRATING 35 YEARS OF THE VARA

For 35 years, Salvatore Ferragamo’s Vara has been worn by style-setters around the globe. In 2007, it inspired the Varina, a ballet flat boasting the same iconic grosgrain bow and gold plaque, garnering its own cult following among Hollywood’s A-list and fashion tastemakers.

1923

Salvatore Ferragamo moves to Santa Barbara, CA and opens up a boot shop that soon catches the eye of some of Hollywood’s elite. He quickly becomes known as the “Shoemaker to the Stars.”

1938

Salvatore Ferragamo buys Palazzo Spini Feroni for 3,400,000 lire and opens the Florence store in the same building. The same year, stores are opened in London and Rome.

1978

Designed by Salvatore Ferragamo’s daughter, Fiamma Di San Giuliani Ferragamo, the “Vara” becomes the Company’s most iconic and famous shoe, whose success continues to this day.

1995

A Salvatore Ferragamo Museum, dedicated to footwear and the history of the company, opens in Palazzo Spini Feroni.

2007

Ferragamo launches the Varina, a ballet flat inspired by the iconic Vara, in rainbow hues, quickly garnering a following amongst celebrities such as Drew Barrymore, Jessica Biel, Carey Mulligan, Emma Roberts, Rachel Bilson, Marion Cotillard, and Emmy Rossum.

2008

Triennale Design Museum, Milan presents the exhibition “Salvatore Ferragamo Evolving Legend 1928-2008” in September, highlighting the Varina as a piece of art.

2009

The Vara clutch debuts on the red carpet and is carried by celebrities such as Demi Moore, Eva Herzigova, and Melissa George.

2010

Ferragamo appoints its first ever Creative Director, Massimiliano Giornetti, launching the brand’s modern direction and reinventing House icons.

2011

Salvatore Ferragamo presents the first Fine Jewelry collection inspired by the Vara iconic symbol.

2012

Ferragamo launches Signorina, a youthful and flirtatious women’s fragrance inspired by the Vara bow, featuring super model Bianca Balti with an event hosted by “Girls About TownAlexandra Richards, Theodora Richards, Stella Schnabel, and Rachel Chandler Guinness.
