The role of Giselle is one of the most sought-after in ballet, as it dem ands impeccable technical skill, great dramatic flair, and outst anding grace and lyricism. In the words of Jin Yao, Principal Dancer of The Hong Kong Ballet, “Giselle is without a doubt my favourite role. It’s physically and emotionally dem anding, but the s tory is so bittersweet – I am always moved by it. And I never get tired of seeing the corps de ballet, as the eerily beautiful Wilis, gliding across the stage in gorgeous, identical arabesques during the seminal White Act”. Tan added “I’m looking forward to my second time performing Giselle with The Hong Kong Ballet. I particularly love the artistic challenge of acting Giselle’s mad scene, before her tragic death. The final farewell scene was the most touching moment, it always brings tears to my eyes.”
For more than 160 years, Giselle has been heralded as the most romantic ballet in the classical reper toire; combining passion and melancholy with beautiful choreography, this ballet has proved an eternal attraction for both newcomers as well as to those already under its spell. The Hong Kong Ballet will perform a production that closely follows the original choreography by Jean Coralli, Jules Perrot and Marius Pepita, at the Hong Kong Cultural Centre’s Gr and Theatre from 25 to 27 May 2012. Tan Yuan Yuan, The Hong Kong Ballet’s Guest Principal Dancer and Principal Dancer of San Francisco Ballet, will perform on the opening night, Friday 25 May 2012. In addition, Soloist of The Hong Kong Ballet, Zhang Si Yuan will be making her debut in the role of Giselle during this production.
